Bats in the Attic – Will They Nest and Have Babies?
During spring, it comes time for bats to start giving birth to young. Like other mothers in the animal kingdom, bats want to find somewhere safe. They want a place they know they can care for their young and have them grow until they can care for themselves.
There are tons of places bats will choose to nest, depending on what is available to them. One place that may catch their attention is your attic.
Your attic makes for a perfect nesting spot, especially so when they have babies. It gives them safety, comfort, darkness – everything they need when they are taking care of their young.
Nesting Bats
Bats like to find dark, secluded areas to nest. Places where they can have darkness during the day and safety at all times.
When they nest, they need a big space for this, too. For their young and for themselves, they need a space that is big enough for the amount of bats nesting. With so many bats coming together to nest, they are going to want something large enough for them all.
Your attic makes a perfect location for bats. It is similar to caves for bat-dwelling caves and it has the space and seclusion that all bats want when nesting.
If there is an opening into your attic, even a small one, you should expect that bats will go in. During the spring, there is a high chance they are going to have babies while in there.
What to Do
If bats are not in your attic currently, close up any opening into your attic. Look thoroughly and seal off every potential access point. Do not give the bats the opportunity to nest in your attic. Make them find another place from the start.
If bats are already in your attic, you are going to have to get them out first. If they have not had babies, just using exclusion funnels is good enough. The bats will leave on their own to find food and have no way back into your attic.
For bats that have already had babies, you might be better off waiting. It takes only a few weeks for babies to begin flying and you might have to remove the young physically if you try removal too early.
Be aware that bats will have babies in your attic. This is something you have to expect if there is an opening to your attic and if bats are in your area.
